Independent Australia: Why can’t the Australian Healthcare Sector commit to net zero emissions if the National Health Service (NHS) can?

November 11, 2020 - The UK’s NHS has announced a wide-sweeping plan to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040, the first national health system in the world to do so, writes Dr Caroline Lee. It’s ambitious. It’s necessary. It’s the right thing to do. If the UK can do it, why can’t we? In practical terms, net zero carbon emissions across the health system means means addressing all sources of carbon pollution within the sector. This including  updating hospital infrastructure, optimising energy use, building new low-emissions hospitals, reducing transport emissions, reducing specific carbon-intensive medicines, increasing use of telehealth and working with suppliers to...

Submission: Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023

October 30, 2023 - Dr. Shaun Watson & Dr. Cybele Dey appeared at the NSW Parliamentary inquiry (Planning and Environment Committee) into the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023 and presented DEA’s submission which was prepared by Drs Shaun Watson, Kim Loo and John Van Der Kallen. “…global health, and consequently the health of the people of NSW, is fundamentally dependent upon limiting climate warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.” Our interpretation of the Bill in its entirety is that this target represents a minimum or ‘floor’ rather than a ‘ceiling’, and that the Net Zero Commission has the capacity to increase this...

Net Zero Carbon Emissions for the Australian Healthcare Sector

September 13, 2021 - Doctors for the Environment Australia’s report, Net Zero Emissions: Responsibilities, pathways and opportunities for Australia’s healthcare sector outlines why the Australian healthcare sector has a responsibility to urgently reduce its carbon footprint and recommendations to achieve this. Required emission reduction targets: – An interim emission reduction target of 80% by 2030. – Net zero emissions by 2040. These healthcare sector emission reduction targets are supported by the organisations listed:...

NHS Progressing Towards Net-Zero Commitment

October 5, 2021 - – Congratulations to the NHS! A year since the NHS’s net-zero commitment in October 2020, it has reported on progress to the NHS Public Board. Their annualised reduction target of approximately 1,260 kt CO2, has been reached—reduction equivalent to 1.7 million flights from London to New York, or 1.1 million homes in the UK. Doctors for the Environment Australia’s proposal for an Australian National Sustainable Healthcare Unit can be found here. DEA welcomes Victoria’s ambitious targets to net-zero emissions by 2045

June 5, 2023 - Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) welcomes the Victorian Government’s emission reduction targets of 75-80% by 2035 and a net zero target by 2045 (brought forward from 2050). DEA has been advocating in this space for some time, and are pleased to see that the Victorian government has adopted these specific recommendations, recognising the importance of proactive action for a healthy planet and healthy people. View DEA’s recommendations HERE. In addition to our formal submission in response to consultation for Victoria’s emissions reduction target for 2035 (requesting an 80% ERT by 2035), we were involved in round table discussions held...
