March 6, 2008 - The World Health Day, celebrated on April 7 each year, creates awareness of a specific health theme to highlight a priority area of concern for the World Health Organisation. For 2008 the World Health Organisation has selected the topic “protecting health from climate change” This submission to the Garnaut Committee will indicate why this topic is so important and will document from the medical and scientific literature the implications for health in Australia. Every day we are lobbying government and industry to protect health through care of the environment.
Below is some of our current advocacy work.
South Australian wind farm developments inquiry and health
July 23, 2012 - Scientific evidence overwhelmingly indicates that increasing green house emissions are responsible for the climate change which is having health impacts throughout the world. Indeed the World Health Organisation (WHO) has calculated considerable morbidity and mortality from climate change impacts in developing countries. Consequently Doctors for the Environment Australia has as its priority the reduction of green house emissions; we support the rapid development of renewable energy sources which do not have significant health impacts. New Vehicle Efficiency Standard for Australia
March 5, 2024 - ...of the New Vehicle Emission Standard. DEA does not support the use of an emissions curve. All covered vehicles should be treated as a single class regardless of weight, to avoid allowing heavier vehicles to be less fuel efficient. This reduces the perverse incentive towards the use of heavier vehicles. Bringing forward ‘real world’ emissions testing for vehicles, Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) or better. Ensure credits are for real reductions in tailpipe emissions, determined by real world testing. Legislating for targets, compliance and penalties rather than placing these in regulations that are more easily changed and would...
Adani Infrastructure’s North Galilee Water Scheme (NGWS) Project (June 2020)
June 30, 2018 - Despite ongoing public pressure, missed deadlines and lack of secure funding, Adani is pushing ahead with their plans to build Australia’s largest coal mine in the Galilee Basin. Their latest bid is to extract yet more water – from the Suttor River via the North Galilee Water Scheme – without a full environmental assessment. This water would potentially be used for other coal mines in the area, and the Suttor River feeds into the major river system going to the Great Barrier Reef. DEA put in a submission to Adani’s North Galilee Water Scheme Project to have this project fully...
Origin Kyalla drilling and hydraulic fracturing 2019 (May 2019)
May 30, 2019 - The NT gas development which will result in GHG emissions many times greater than those of the Adani mine will commence in the next few months. DEA has made this submission to the Environmental Management Plan on the Kyalla drilling proposal. The “achievements” of these developments which are strongly supported by the NT governments and by the Federal Coalition and Labor will be to make international emissions difficult to contain and a 2°C rise will be likely; Australia with NT and WA development will be the world’s largest gas exporter. This submission addresses particularly the international implications of the development....
