December 13, 2020 - Towards net zero emissions in healthcare The changing climate is exposing our patients and communities to more frequent and intense extreme weather. Health professionals are increasingly treating climate-related illnesses, and healthcare services are vulnerable to a range of risks, including an increase in patient demand and threats to infrastructure, workforce and supply chains. Yet the healthcare sector itself is a significant contributor to climate change through its own carbon footprint, which is estimated to be 7% of Australia’s total carbon emissions. DEA is calling on the healthcare sector to achieve: – An interim emission reduction target of 80% by 2030. –...

Submission: Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023
October 30, 2023 - Dr. Shaun Watson & Dr. Cybele Dey appeared at the NSW Parliamentary inquiry (Planning and Environment Committee) into the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Bill 2023 and presented DEA’s submission which was prepared by Drs Shaun Watson, Kim Loo and John Van Der Kallen. “…global health, and consequently the health of the people of NSW, is fundamentally dependent upon limiting climate warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.” Our interpretation of the Bill in its entirety is that this target represents a minimum or ‘floor’ rather than a ‘ceiling’, and that the Net Zero Commission has the capacity to increase this...

If the author wants to submit recommendations outside the TOR, it may be possible to apply to the responsible committee to have the TOR expanded. Framing a submission strictly in accordance with the terms of reference or legislative requirements increases its relevance by addressing the issues...
Climate Change (National Framework for Adaptation and Mitigation) Bills 2020
November 20, 2020 - Zali Steggall’s proposed climate change Bills have triggered the first parliamentary inquiry into why Australia should commit and legislate to net zero emissions by 2050. The Bills will assist the health sector in driving mitigation, adaptation and resilience planning that is needed to deal with the climate change health emergency. DEA wholly supports the Bills in setting specific targets for net zero emissions and adjusting stricter interim targets to achieve those goals. DEA’s submission is here....
